You might be wondering why I am dressed like Michael Corleone, from the Godfather and Godfather II, two of my favorite movies.
It is because I have a message for you today “that you can’t refuse”.
That message is: “Impossible – Says Who?”
You may find it funny, but I have learned many great business lessons in those Godfather movies, and one of them is that “nothing is impossible”.
In Godfather II, they’re talking about a subject that is not particularly appetizing. They are talking about trying to kill off one of their rivals, someone who has betrayed Michael. It is a man name Hyman Roth, who is under close guard by the government. In that scene, one of Michael’s advisers says, “You know when he’s being protected by them, it’s impossible. We can’t get to him.”
Michael Corleone looks at one of his other henchmen and says, “What do you think?”
He says, “Difficult, but not impossible.”
And then, of course, they go ahead and do what was thought to be impossible.
There are a lot of things in business and in life that used to be thought of as impossible.
Think about the horseless carriage. Automobile travel – travel without being pulled by a horse – was once considered impossible.
Think about the four-minute mile. It was widely accepted that a human being cannot run a mile in under four minutes. That was, until Roger Bannister did it. After that, many managed to accomplish this feat.
Consider flight. Ask the Wright brothers if they thought it was impossible. And space travel – think about when John F. Kennedy said they were going to put a man on the moon and bring him safely back to earth. Many critics came out and said it was impossible, that it was a pipe dream. President Kennedy actually put a time limit on it. He said it would be done by the end of the decade – and, sure enough, it was done with a few months to spare.
The impossible became possible.
So, my friends, think about what your dreams are – what your goals are. And when somebody tells you they are impossible, instead of arguing with them, just smile, give them a hug, and tell them thank you.
Because that’s all the motivation you need.
