How May I Serve You? What Great Leaders Do

In the August Catalyst Newsletter, I reviewed the book "The Secret".  Well, I just read another little book by the same name.  This Secret was written by Ken Blanchard of One-Minute Manager fame and Mark Miller.  Quick read, simple yet powerful message, focused on what great leaders really do.  Read this blog, then check out the book.  Great leaders serve their employees.  They are not served.  They S E R V E.  See The Future:  They have a vision for the group and stir passion in their people. Engage and Develop Others:  They choose people carefully, put them in the right roles and invest … [Read more...]

What do Bill Gates, Bill Cosby, and Bill Nye have in common … with you?

They each have 168, just like you. 168 what? $168? 168 friends on Facebook? 168 bones in their bodies? (nope – that is 208) Each of these men gets 168 hours per week (24 X 7 = 168). So do you. 168 is your allowance, your budget, the clay you have to mold into your life. One hundred and sixty-eight glorious hours packed into seven days. How are you spending it? Unfortunately, many take their 168 hours for granted. If you had 168 bars of gold, would you throw any away? Of course not! Treat each hour as a precious resource and spend it wisely. How do you go about making the most of … [Read more...]

The best business movie of all time …

Movies are entertainment.  Movies allow us to escape for a few hours to a place we've never been, often to places that don't exist.  Those that make movies frequently have a message to deliver, something they want to say.  Sometimes the message is obvious and sometimes it is hidden.  In some cases, the message is secondary to the main plot of the story.  I find this to be true about my favorite movie, the Godfather. The Godfather (1972) is a story of family, of rising and falling in America, of honor, passion and violence.  It is also, in my humble opinion, the best business movie of all … [Read more...]

The Power of Laughter … at Work!

Believe it or not, laughter is often a controversial topic in offices around the globe.  We all know people who laugh easily, laugh often and possibly laugh excessively.  While moderation is advisable in most areas of life, it is my observation that there is far too little laughter in most offices.  Why? Did you know that the typical child laughs over 400 times per day, while adults average only 15 daily laughs (a reduction of 96%!)?  Laughter is healthy at home and in the workplace.  Studies have proven that people who laugh regularly live happier, longer lives. Laughter's effects are not … [Read more...]

“I can do anything good!” The power of affirmations.

Daily affirmations are positive thoughts or statements about the things you wish to achieve.  Often, they are related to your health, wealth, success, or relationships. Use positive “self-talk” to direct the focus of your day.  Affirmations have been shown to help people overcome fears, develop confidence and to create a happier disposition. Affirmations can support your values, help you to  formulate and reach goals, and prepare you for challenging situations. You can say your positive daily affirmations silently or aloud to yourself. Repetition of affirmations will also counteract … [Read more...]
